The Italian town of Merano lies in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy and boasts a rich history. Although it is known that the region was inhabited as early as 3000BC, the earliest record of a town was in 857 when known as Mairania. The town has had a racecourse since 1935, with its most famous race, the Gran Premio Merano launched in the same year. The right handed turf track for Flat racing has a perimeter of 10 furlongs, but it is best known for its figure of eight jumps track. The Gran Premio Merano consists of 24 demanding obstacles and takes place each September.
